About this project

This southwest Minneapolis home still has its original wood window sashes, each with a roman numeral cut into the frame to mark its opening. Over about nine months we refinished them in batches — 17 sashes and their screens — taking each batch to our shop and bringing it back finished.

Every sash went through the same sequence: fully strip and sand to bare wood, stain, seal, sand, varnish, sand, and varnish again. Stain only goes on evenly once the failed finish is completely off, and the second varnish coat adds protection against sun and condensation. The roman numerals meant every sash went back into the opening it came from. We also painted the storm door with an exterior trim enamel.
