About this project
This was a whole-main-level golden oak project. The family room had the classic 1990s package: oak bookcases flanking a brick fireplace, an oak surround and crown, and oak casings and doors throughout. We shellac-primed every oak surface to lock in the tannins, filled and caulked, and finished the trim and built-ins in a white urethane enamel.
The den went the other way: its oak built-ins, mantel and crown were restained a deep espresso, which ties into the dark handrail on the staircase. Painting the stair skirt and spindles white while keeping a dark rail is one of the most requested combinations we do — the rail hides hand wear and the white parts brighten the foyer. The front door was painted black to finish the entry.
