Each range starts at the lowest price we can paint that room for with full prep, two coats and cleanup. The upper ends mostly follow published 2024–2026 price lists from Twin Cities painting contractors and cover heavier prep, more trim, color changes and harder access. Cells marked ”—” vary too much to generalize.

What drives the price

Prep. The biggest variable. A room with nail pops, patched holes, cracked corners and failing caulk can take as long to prepare as to paint. We light-check every wall before quoting so the prep is priced in, not discovered later.

Trim and doors. Trim is slow, precise work. A room with lots of windows, wainscoting or built-ins costs more than a room with four walls and a door.

Ceilings. Flat ceilings in an 8-foot room are straightforward. Vaulted ceilings, two-story foyers and stairwells need planks, extension poles and more setup time.

Color change. Same color, one or two coats. Dark to light, add a primer coat. Deep reds and yellows sometimes need three finish coats.

Occupied vs. empty. Moving and covering furniture, working around family schedules and keeping rooms usable each evening all take time.

Getting the most for your budget

  • Group rooms. The first room carries most of the setup; each added room is cheaper.
  • Decide colors before the crew arrives. Test patches on the actual walls help.
  • Ask what paint is specified. We use Sherwin-Williams Duration Interior matte on walls and Emerald Urethane on trim — ask any painter for the product name, not just “premium paint.”

How we got these numbers: Interior and cabinet ranges are Paintcrafters’ own: each starts at the lowest price we can do that scope for. Other ranges are compiled from published 2024–2026 price guides of Twin Cities painting contractors. They are planning numbers, not quotes — every Paintcrafters price comes from an on-site walkthrough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do painters charge by the square foot or by the room?

Most residential painters in the Twin Cities price by the room or by the project after a walkthrough, using square footage, trim count and prep as inputs. Per-square-foot numbers you see online usually refer to floor area and are only rough guides.

Is paint included in the price?

In a professional quote, yes. Premium paint is typically 15–20% of an interior painting price; the rest is prep and labor.

How can I lower the cost of interior painting?

Keep the same color (one coat may be enough), do several rooms at once so setup is shared, and clear the rooms of small items before the crew arrives. Painting in winter can also offer more scheduling flexibility.

Does changing from a dark color to a light one cost more?

Usually. Covering a dark or saturated color often needs a primer coat or an extra finish coat, which adds labor and material.
